Daily Midtermer: McCain to run in ‘10
You daily source of news for the 2010 midterm elections.
UNITED STATES SENATE:
McCain to run for reelection … In Arizona, former Presidential candidate John McCain announced he would seek reelection in 2010. Small surprise, I thought McCain might walk away. Especially since he could face big problem in his bid for a fifth term if popular Governor Janet Napolitano decides to challenge McCain. An Arizona poll released before the Presidential election showed big problems for McCain in his home state. A pol taken on OCT 31 by Research 2000, showed in a hypothetical match up Napolitano leads McCain 53% to 45%. Not a good sign for McCain. The DEMs just need to talk Napolitano into a bid. More in depth piece on a possible McCain/Napolitano battle. ARI Status: GOP Incumbent (Sen. McCain), Running for Reelection 3BD Rank: ***
Van Hollen Would run, but lacks a seat … MD Rep. Chris Van Hollen says he is interested in running for the US Senate. His problem is, there is no seat available. That is of course, that Senator Barbara Mikulski is running again, which she has not revealed. If Mikulski stunningly decides against running, pencil Van Hollen in. MD Status: DEM Incumbent (Senator Barbara Mikulski), No Word Yet
Reid is a GOP target in ‘10 … Count on newly selected SRCC Chairman Sen. John Cornyn (TX) to go after Harry Reid on nearly everything. Reid is up for reelection in 2010 and Nevada is a new Battleground state where both parties are competitive, even though DEMs seem to be on the upsurge. So far, NV Lt. Gov. Brian Koloicki has expressed interesting in a possible bid against Reid. Two defeated GOP Congressmen John Porter and Joe Heck may be candidates as well. Question is — if they could not win their House seats, what makes them think they can win statewide? NV Status: DEM Incumbent (Sen. Harry Reid) 3BD Rank: *** 1/2
Former Sen. Gordon Smith against Senator Rod Wyden? … I would think the GOP has better brains than that. Then again, it is Oregon, and the GOP is a dying monster in the Northwest. Rep. Greg Walden is also mentioned as a possible challenger to Senator Wyden. As the article points out, Smith ran an an Obama fan and Wyden buddy. How could he make the message in 2010 without looking like an idiot. Last approval rating was in October, Wyden was solid at 54% approve, 24% disapprove. OR Status: DEM Incumbent (Sen. Rod Wyden) 3BD Rank: **.
Will Rossi ever go away .. After failing twice to win the Governorship in Washington, Dino Rossi is a mentioned candidate to run against DEM Sen. Pat Murray. AG Rob McKenna and businessman Mike McGavick are also mentioned. We fully expect Murray to win easily. In October, her approval ratings were at 55% to 35%. WA Status: DEM Incumbent (Sen. Patty Murray) 3BD Rating: *
STATE GOVERNORS:
Archer in Michigan? … Former Detroit Mayor David Archer is reportedly interested in a possible bid to replace outgoing Gov. Jennifer Granholm. MI Status: Open Seat, DEM Term Limit
McMaster serious for 2010 … South Carolina GOP Atty. General Henry McMaster is seriously considering a bid to replace Gov. Mark Sanford. No word on any DEM candidates. SC Status: Open Seat, GOP Term Limit
