Kerry Congratulates Obama, Clinton
Senator John Kerry, once thought to be the front runner to be President-elect Barack Obama’s Secretary of States, congratulated Obama as Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton in a statement released today.
“As secretary of state, my friend and colleague Hillary Clinton will bring her years of experience and her remarkable intellect to the effort to restore our alliances and advance the president’s agenda in the world,” Kerry, a Boston Democrat, said.
“President-elect Obama has chosen a terrific national security team to protect our security and help restore America’s rightful place in the world,” Kerry said. “I look forward to working with my distinguished colleague Sen. Richard Lugar to ensure a swift and fair confirmation process and working closely with the new Administration.”
Not quite sure what happened to Kerry’s front runner status, whether it really was just a change in heart by Obama or some other detail to likely be reported later, but Kerry has stepped up to the plate and in lock step with President-elect Obama. Kerry campaigned pretty vigorously for the SofS role.
Kerry will still play an important, impact role in the development of a new foreign policy under President-elect Obama, having been names as Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. Kerry assumes the Chairmanship held previously by Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
